Lab Technician

CRAG is an independent research institution engaged in leading-edge basic and applied plant and farm animal sciences. CRAG is established as a Consortium of the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC), Institute of Agrifood Research and Technology (IRTA), Autonomous University of Barcelona (UAB), and University of Barcelona (UB). The Center is located at the UAB Campus, and currently hosts 200 members from across the world.

Research Programs at CRAG (from basic science to applied research using plant experimental model systems, crops and farm animals) make extensive use of genomic technologies and large sets of genetic and genomic data (https://www.cragenomica.es/sites/default/files/2022-07/crag-summary-2020-2021_0.pdf).

RESPONSIBILITIES:

The candidate will be involved in a project using microalgae as a source of novel metabolites to assay for biostimulant activity in crops. Chlamydomonas microalgae will be grown under different conditions to generate a diversity of extracts, that will be screened by HPLC to maximize variability of metabolic profiles. Suitable extracts will be next tested biochemically to predict stress resistance activity. Finally, bioassays in tomato plants will be conducted to determine biostimulant activity.

The tasks are included within the framework of the project Severo Ochoa REFERENCE CEX2019-000902S”.

REQUIREMENTS:

• Educational requirements: BS in Biochemistry, Biotechnology, or equivalent. Master degree in Plant Biology, Genomics and Biotechnology, or similar will be positively considered.
• Skills: Microalgae and plant maintenance, biochemical assays.
• Experience: Previous laboratory experience is required. Experience in microalgae and plant maintenance and manipulation, and previous work with proteins and HPLC will be positively considered.

Contract Duration: 10 months
