Improvement of plant tolerance towards nutrient deficiency abiotic and biotic stresses

Project description
The project focuses on the use of a new class of redox proteins, the so-called flavo-di-iron proteins (FLIP) from blue-green algae, to make crops such as cereals more resistant to various stress situations and to optimize the agronomic characteristics of the plants and thus ensure future food availability. FLIPs are able to replace the stress-sensitive protein ferredoxin and therefore maintain the photosynthetic metabolism. In this project, these proteins were first introduced into Arabidopsis plants to elucidate the molecular and biochemical mechanisms of the applied stress tolerance. These results form the basis for the investigations with the cultivated plant barley, which was treated with the same proteins. Extensive phenotyping results and agronomically important parameters were investigated. It was found that these proteins did indeed increase growth and thus the yield of barley under stress conditions, in this case drought stress. It could be shown that plant-like proteins from closely related blue-green algae are suitable as biotechnological tools for increasing plant performance under constantly changing environmental conditions.
